The vast savannas of East Africa support a multitude of some of the largest animals on Earth wandering in their endless quest for food, shelter and mates. The African elephant is one of these migrants. The Tarangire elephant project began in 1993 as Dr. Charles Foley’s doctoral study on the effects of poaching on the social system of the African elephant.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: African Elephant Ivory
Poaching for ivory is the most immediate threat to the future of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana). The species is listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) with a special rule that allows for certain activities that are normally prohibited.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service African Elephant Conservation Act Summary Report 1998-2000
The African elephant is considered a “keystone species”: that is, one that plays a pivotal role in the ecosystem. As modifiers of their habitat, elephants second only to humans. Many scientists believe that the ecological integrity of African savannas and forests depends, to a large extent, on the presence of ephants. Their disappearance may produce a cascade of changes in the environment that are as yet poorly understood.
